Mamma Mia!

Location: Prince of Wales Theatre

In 2008 the world stood up and sung together as the movie Mamma Mia! hit cinema screens and broke box office records in the United Kingdom. It brought this blockbuster musical to the attention of people around the world and cemented the story for years to come. With stars such as Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, it delighted audiences both young and old.

It is of course the musical based on the music of ABBA, which started out life on the stage. So if you are a fan of the movie, then maybe you should take a look at where it all began.

Such is the success of the stage version, 170 cities can boast to having presented it from locations that span the globe. Audiences have seen this show in London of course, but they have also seen it in locations in the rest of Europe, the United States, Australia and Asia, bringing in a total sum of $2 billion. As a result of its colossal success, expect to see theatres continuing to show it for some time to come.

Mamma Mia! has been at the Prince of Wales Theatre since Thursday 3rd June 2004 before which it was housed at the Prince Edward theatre from April 1999, meaning that 2009 is its tenth year in London. Of its $2 billion worldwide gross, £155 million of it comes from the UK box office, where it has been seen by 5 million people. When figures like this are taken into account, it’s no wonder the movie version achieved similar success.

In the show we follow the exploits of Sophie, a girl who is soon to be married to the handsome young man by the name of Sky. When the big day comes she wants nothing more than for the father to walk her down the aisle…but there’s a problem, Sophie never knew her father. However, there is just enough time to find out before the special day arrives and with the help of her mother’s diary she has narrowed it down to three men. Inviting them all for the big day, it’s only a matter time before the problem is solved…at least, that’s the plan! Along the way, the story is brought to life with the songs of ABBA, including hit tunes such as “Thank You For The Music”, “Super Trooper”, “Waterloo”, “Chiquita” and of course “Mamma Mia”.
